Mobile phone technology has come along way siince the eighties (for those of you who can remember the size, weight and look of mobile phones from the eighties) they resembled  concrete bricks. The new smart phones on the market today are so far advanced from the standard analogue phones of the past.  There are a number of applications that compliment radio communication and can benefit radio operators from all walks of life.  One application in particluar is Echolink.  People who are familiar with Echolink from a PC point of view will find this very useful as it will allow you to talk to other amateur radio stations via your mobile phone. Something that you could not do in the past.
